Last summer, when researching wedding stationery, I became fascinated with the calligraphy process. I spent some time studying up on the tools needed, different stroke types, and many standard+modern fonts. If y’all only saw how many hours and notebooks I went through trying to perfect this lovely art form…you would laugh!
Unfortunately, the good Lord blessed me to be left-handed, which does not mesh well with this craft. You see, the beautifully delicate strokes of calligraphy are created using the even-flow nibs (pen points) pulled across the paper at just the perfect angle. ‘Lefties’ are notorious for being pen pushers. I even purchased a set of left-handed nibs in hopes that I would have more luck, but again was unsuccessful. I finally realized, that without formal training, my dreams of becoming a
darn good calligrapher were slim-to-none!
I didn’t stop there…
Due to my continually-growing obsession with calligraphy and hand-written/painted quotes (you know-the ones we all repost constantly on Instagram), I decided to create my own knock-off or faux technique.
Here’s my 3-step process:
First-Take a colored pencil (DO NOT use lead/graphite or you’ll see the silver streaks!) and begin lightly writing your word/quote in cursive. Note: Be sure to aim bigger+spaced out to ensure room for developing detailed thickness.
Second-Using the ink color of your choice (coordinated with the colored pencil) and begin tracing the template using thin strokes.
Third-Time for the detail! Using the same ink-source, or a similar one with slightly increased thickness, shade all the downward strokes to give the appearance of a more natural and beveled font.
That’s it! Don’t forget to play with the ‘level’ of the letter drops as they lay on their imaginary line, as well as the ‘style’ as it pertains to your look for the project. Here are some examples of how you can style this handy trick.
Stationary-There’s something too sweet about a handwritten detail! I absolutely love personal touches and hope my friends and family do too. Here’s a simple way to make that letter/card/gift that much sweeter.
Wall Art-Sometimes you just have the perfect quote in your head but can’t find the wall art at the store and/or don’t feel like paying someone on Etsy to create it. Don’t doubt in your abilities (take it from this perfectionist!) and ‘do-it-yourself’!! It’ll be just as cute and you’ll have all the benefits of time and money. This beauty right here took me a total of 15 minutes, and is just perfect for my sweet sweet best friend to come visit the #laniersresidence this weekend!
Enjoy and let me know how your faux calligraphy looks turn out, how you would style it, and any other ‘faux’ tricks you have developed.
